 Ethan Cumbler, MD, FACP, FHMEthan Cumbler MD, FHM, FACP is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is the President of the Medical Staff of the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH). He developed and is Medical Director for the UCH Acute Care for the Elderly Unit which is a crucible for testing QI methods for reducing iatrogenic events such as falls or hospital acquired infections using teams of professionals across disciplines. Dr. Cumbler was Alpha Omega Alpha and valedictorian of the University of Kentucky College Of Medicine and completed combined Internal Medicine and Pediatric residency training at Good Samaritan/Phoenix Children’s Hospital in Phoenix Arizona. He has practiced as both community and academic hospitalist. Dr. Cumbler’s research involves utilizing team-based care to improve hospital systems to benefit vulnerable elderly patient populations. He has led multi-state QI initiatives and speaks nationally on how to improve systems of hospital care for vulnerable elderly populations. He is a founding faculty member of the Institute for Healthcare Quality, Safety, and Efficiency in Colorado. His quality improvement research includes publications in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Stroke, and the Journal of Hospital Medicine. His novel educational methods have been published and disseminated via the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Geriatric’s Society Portal of Online Geriatric Education. Dr. Cumbler has been a recipient of awards at UCH for excellence in leadership, humanism, education, and quality improvement. Dr. Cumbler received multiple national awards for developing clinical innovations as well as the Society of Hospital Medicine annual Award for Team-Based Quality Improvement.
